Stephen Catlin is an Associate Patent Attorney at RIPLO licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia (since 2003) and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (since 1992).  Stephen graduated in 2002 from George Mason University School of Law, in Arlington, Virginia and completed the Intellectual Property Track.

Stephen’s practice involves all areas of intellectual property, including U.S. and foreign prosecution, where he has successfully drafted and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications to issuance in a diverse field of technologies, including automotive (e.g., engines, hybrid technologies, drivetrains, batteries, tires, navigation) and other mechanical fields (e.g., copiers, printers, mechanical gaming systems, medical devices), electrical fields (e.g., telecommunications, imaging systems, and semiconductor manufacture), as well as computer sciences fields.  His experience includes an extensive patent searching background, as well as patent validity and infringement counseling.  Stephen has also successfully argued before the Board of Patent Appeals & Interferences on numerous occasions.

Stephen completed his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, in Rapid City, South Dakota, but took extensive additional coursework in other technical disciplines, including Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.  Stephen is also an avid car enthusiast who competes regionally at various autocrosses and attends several high performance driving events each year.

Prior to joining RIPLO, Stephen was a computer programmer for the City of Rapid City (1987-1988), and a patent searcher (1988-1992), patent agent (1992-2003) and patent attorney (2003-2010) for the intellectual property law firm of Oliff & Berridge, PLC.
